Choosing between a free standing punch bag and a hanging punch bag is one of the first decisions any boxer or martial artist has to make. Both have their advantages — the right choice depends on your training space, your goals and your budget.
A free standing punch bag sits on a weighted base and requires no ceiling fixings or wall brackets. You simply fill the base with sand or water, place it in your training space and start hitting.
The most common complaint with free standing bags is movement during training. To minimise this, always fill the base with sand rather than water — sand is heavier and provides significantly more stability. Place the bag on a non-slip mat and ensure the base is filled to capacity.

A hanging punch bag is suspended from a ceiling bracket, wall mount or free standing frame. It swings freely during use, which more closely replicates the movement of a real opponent.
For most home users, a free standing punch bag is the practical choice. No installation is required, it can be moved easily and it is suitable for the whole family. For serious training, a hanging bag delivers a more authentic experience — but only if you have the space and fixings to support it.
If you are buying for a child, a free standing adjustable bag is almost always the right choice. If you are setting up a dedicated home gym or boxing room, consider a hanging bag on a ceiling bracket or a heavy bag stand.
