    Martial Arts Equipment Buying Guide

Choosing the Right Martial Arts Uniform

The gi is the traditional uniform worn in many martial arts including BJJ, judo and karate. For BJJ and judo, look for a heavyweight gi for durability during grappling. Karate gis are lighter for freedom of movement. Always check the sizing chart as gi sizes vary by brand and a well fitted gi should allow full range of motion without excess fabric.

    Gloves and Hand Protection

MMA gloves are open fingered and designed for both striking and grappling. Boxing style gloves are used for pad and bag work in Muay Thai and kickboxing. Bag mitts are lighter and ideal for heavy bag training. Always use hand wraps underneath gloves to protect your wrists and knuckles during striking sessions.

    Protective Equipment

A mouthguard is essential for all contact martial arts. Shin guards are vital for Muay Thai and kickboxing to protect both you and your training partner. Headguards reduce the risk of cuts and absorb impact during sparring. Groin guards are mandatory for male practitioners in most striking disciplines. Chest protectors are recommended for beginners and junior practitioners.

    Pads and Training Equipment

Focus pads and Thai pads are used by coaches and training partners to develop striking technique, speed and power. Kick shields are ideal for practising powerful kicks and knees. Grappling dummies are excellent for solo drilling of takedowns and submission techniques. Heavy bags are essential for building power and conditioning in striking arts.

    Belts and Ranking

In many martial arts, the belt system represents rank and progression. Ensure you purchase the correct colour belt for your current grade. BJJ belts are wider and stiffer than karate or judo belts. Always check with your instructor before purchasing a new belt to confirm the correct style and colour for your academy.

    Footwear

Many martial arts such as BJJ, judo and karate are practised barefoot on mats. Wrestling shoes provide grip and ankle support for wrestling and grappling arts. Martial arts shoes are lightweight and flexible, suitable for forms and light sparring. Sandals should always be worn when walking off the mat to maintain hygiene.
