Choosing the right size punch bag makes a significant difference to your training. Too light and the bag won't absorb your power properly. Too heavy and it becomes difficult to move and work combinations around. Here is everything you need to know to choose the right size.
The general rule for hanging punch bags is to choose a bag that weighs approximately half your body weight. This gives you a bag that absorbs your strikes without being so heavy that it barely moves.
For free standing punch bags, the weight of the bag itself matters less than the weight of the filled base. A heavier base means a more stable bag during training.
For hanging bags, the standard length is 4ft (120cm) for juniors and 5ft (150cm) for adults. A 5ft bag allows you to work body shots and head-height combinations without the bag being too short.
For free standing bags, look for an adjustable height model if you are buying for a child or a household with multiple users. Most VIPER adjustable free standing bags extend from around 3ft to 5ft, covering children from age 3 upwards through to adult height.
For children, a free standing adjustable punch bag is almost always the right choice. Look for a bag with a height range that covers your child now and allows room to grow. A 3ft–5ft adjustable bag suits most children from age 3 to early teens.
Many of our VIPER kids punch bag sets include gloves, making them a convenient all-in-one starter kit.
For home training, the most important factor is often the available space rather than the ideal weight. A free standing bag in the 4ft–5ft range suits most adults training at home and can be moved or stored when not in use.
If you have a dedicated training space with ceiling fixings, a 5ft hanging bag filled to 30–40kg is the most versatile option for adult home training.
