    Boxing Equipment Buying Guide

    Choosing the Right Boxing Gloves

Boxing gloves are the most essential piece of kit. For bag work and pad work, 10–12oz gloves are ideal for lighter fighters, while 14–16oz gloves offer more protection for heavier hitters and sparring. Heavier gloves provide more padding and are recommended for beginners to protect both hands and training partners.

    Bag Gloves vs Sparring Gloves

Bag gloves are designed for heavy bag and pad sessions — they are lighter and more compact for speed and impact. Sparring gloves are larger and more padded to protect both you and your sparring partner. Never use bag gloves for sparring.

    Boxing Pads & Punch Bags

Focus pads are used by trainers to improve speed, accuracy and combination work. Body shields are ideal for practising body shots and kicks. Heavy bags are essential for building power and endurance — freestanding bags are great for home use, while hanging bags are preferred in gyms for a more authentic feel.

    Headguards & Protective Gear

A good headguard is essential for sparring, reducing the risk of cuts and absorbing impact. Look for full-face or open-face designs depending on your training style. Gumshields, groin guards and chest protectors are also vital for safe sparring sessions.

    Hand Wraps

Hand wraps protect your knuckles, wrists and hands before putting on gloves. Traditional cotton wraps (4.5m) offer the best wrist support. Mexican-style stretch wraps mould to the hand for a snug fit. Always wrap your hands before every session.

    Boxing Footwear

Boxing boots provide ankle support, grip and lightweight movement in the ring. High-top boots offer maximum ankle support, while low-top boots allow greater freedom of movement. Choose a sole with good grip for quick footwork on canvas or gym floors.
